- SynopsisNayland Smith and Dr Petrie investigate a `haunted' house and fall into the clutches of Fu-Manchu, narrowly escaping death by torture. (Synopsis) Rl. 1. Title missing. Nayland Smith and Petie are asked by Inspector Weymouth of Scotland Yard to investigate the mysterious deaths of two previous tenants of "The Gables" who apparently died from fear. The house is empty with a reputation for being haunted. Disguised as two professors of the occult, the detectives spend a night in the house; Petrie is left alone and is nearly scared out of his wits by a mysterious ringing of bells, opening and shutting doors and the appearance of a naked arm whose fiery hand clutches a danger. The following morning, after he has finished his investigations, Nayland Smith tells Petrie he suspects the house to be a hiding place of Fu-Manchu and demonstrates the "mysteries" of the bells and arm. They decide to return to the house to investigate a studio in the grounds. Rl. 2. Aziz, a young boy, seeks the assistance of Nayland Smith to rescue his sister, Karamaneh, from Fu-Manchu and in a flashback describes how she was captured by Fu-Manchu in the desert. Leaving the boy in the charge of a sergeant, Nayland Smith and Petrie disguise themselves and enter the studio; here they find Karamaneh who warns them to leave. Ignoring her advice, they step behind a curtain and are immediately shot down into the cellars where they are bound hand and foot by Fu Manchu's dacoits. Nayland Smith is subject by Fu Manchu to torture by ravenous rats; to spare him, Dr Petrie is about to kill his friend with a sword provided by Fu Manchu when Karamaneh creeps silently on the scene and shoots the master criminal. Later, Webster reports that the body of Fu Manchu was buried under rubble when the cellar collapsed. The End (2008ft). (Shotlist)
