"Not the least of London's wonders is that century-old highway, the Regent's Canal - and to barge along its waters is to see London from an entirely new and fascinating angle..." (25). The Limehouse Basin, with the canal in the foreground and warehouses and a sailing ship in the background (31). "Let us start from the Regent Canal Dock, in Limehouse..." (39). Shot as per previous, but with a barge loaded with coal entering the canal through lock gates (73). "Having got its first rise in the world, our barge is helped along by means of the capstan...." "...while Dobbin waits his turn." (98). Bargee and his horse standing on canal bank (103). "All aboard! Soon we'll pass some back-gardens, little bits of Heaven amid the gaunt wharves of East London....." (114). Two shots of terraced housing with gardens backing onto the canal. Some people are leaning on their garden fencing watching the barge as it passes. A factory with chimney is next to the housing in the background (129). (223). Panning shot at a busy street junction, being a shopping area with many people, trams, buses and cars. A clothing shop called "GARDINER'S" is on one corner, and a church with a spire is at the far end of one street (236). Shot as per 209-216, with a train passing over bridge in background (247). "This little bridge spans the Hertford Union Canal, where joining the River Lee, we may branch off to Bishops Stortford...." (261). Shot from the moving barge as it passes the junction with the Hertford Union, the junction being spanned by a small bridge (269). Emerging from a tunnel to approach another lock (280). "...but we'll carry on barging through London, for, at Old Ford, the scenery becomes almost truly-rural..." (293). Passing housing with trees and shrubbery in their gardens which back onto the canal (303). Bargee and horse in distance on towpath, with the canal bounded by fencing, behind which are rows of tall trees [this may be Victoria Park] (308). Shot as per 293-303, with two men and a woman leaning on fencing and waving at the camera (315). Approaching a footbridge with a small group of people standing and watching. The bargee and his horse go under the bridge (323). "Acton's Lock, by London Fields, is very popular with the jolly Bargee, for here he is able to nip out to "see the time"......." (332). Street scene, at junction with no traffic but with a few pedestrians, including two women with prams and a man with a barrow. Shot from the canal side (362). "Still maintaining our dizzy speed, we make a dash through Hackney..." (369). Hackney street scene, with trams, cars and lorries on the road, and a few pedestrians. There is a bridge across the road in the background (381). Moving towards a tunnel with a man sitting at the front of the barge. The bargee and horse go into the tunnel (391). LS of the bargee operating the rudder [note that this is not the coal barge, as the area in front of the bargee is covered, whereas previously it was open and contained coal]. Another barge passes going in the opposite direction (397). Shot as per 381-391 (404). Shot as per 391-397 (408). Shot inside the tunnel, with daylight at the tunnel mouth in the far distance (449). "Nearly gassed - but nearly through!" (453). Another shot in the tunnel, but closer to mouth (464). "Hullo! We've got a bit mixed up in the dark.... we're on a different barge now!" (475). POV shot emerging from tunnel [The barge is not seen, despite the preceding intertitle, and it had already changed from a coal barge before arriving at Islington Tunnel] (484). "This is a fast one. On we speed - over the old Great Northern Railway at King's Cross..." (493). Panning shot, taken at high vantage point, from King's Cross Station onto local area with bustling streets (504). "......and under the Midland at St. Pancras..." (528). Large passageway at the entrance to St. Pancras Station. Platforms and people can be seen on the other side of the passage [although they are not very clear owing to the darkness of the image]. Two men enter and leave through the passageway (536). Barge approaching a metal bridge (544). Going under the bridge, and coming out into an area of tenement-type housing (552). "Another Lock at Kentish Town. Who'd have thought the country was so mountainous around these parts!" (563). [Either footage is missing or that "mountainous" reference makes no sense] Moving into a very narrow lock. Railway arches in the background (571). Street scene, with drinking fountain in foreground and shops in the background. A few pedestrians are in shot, and a car and a tram pass the camera (581). Moving towards a footbridge spanning the canal in the area of the park containing London Zoo, with another footbridge in the distance. People are walking over the bridges. The bargee and horse are in the distance (681). "...and all these people are thrilled by our breathless race through the Zoo...." (688). Shot similar to 671-681, with crowd of people standing and watching the barge pass underneath (699). LS of the bargee at the rudder (704). Further shot going through park (712). Going through a tunnel, with the bargee at the rudder in silhouette, before emerging into sunlight (721). Approaching a tunnel, with a building covered in scaffolding next to the canal and a barge moored alongside (727). "Mind your heads! - here's another Tunnel, with no tug to help us this time....." (737). Entering a tunnel, and the bargee chains the rudder to the deck (750). "This is where Dobbin laughs, for the Bargee has to do all the work himself." (760). As the barge emerges from the tunnel, the bargee comes into shot to show him pushing the barge along by use of a pole pressed against the tunnel wall (776). "At last, we come to Journey's End. We have Barged through London, and now we come to rest - in Paddington Basin, just off Edgeware Road." (790). "FINIS" (791ft). [There is presumably footage missing which originally followed that last intertitle. The FINIS end title is not original either, and has been spliced onto the viewing copy].
