Synopsis: Supernatural horror. Three trustees of charity which runs a children's home on a Scottish island are found dead under strange circumstances. Colonel Bingham of Special Branch suspects murder, and duly investigates, aided by the eminent scientist Sir Mark Ashley. One of Sir Mark's young patients, named Mary, has been suffering vivid nightmares about deadly blazes, following a disaster involving a coach going on fire. From the publicity surrounding the case, Mary's mother, Anna, a convicted killer, tracks Mary down to a London hospital and tries to reclaim her daughter. When Mary is taken up to the safety of Scotland, Anna follows. More deaths of trustees ensue. Journalist Joan Foster draws Sir Mark's attention to Mary's unusual use of language in a recording of her traumas, leading Sir Mark to suspect the truth about the children's home. Meanwhile, Bingham fears for the safety of the children in the home and orders as many police as possible to be present, but his caution is resisted by the people who run the home. Avoiding detection by search parties, Anna closes in on the home. At a fireworks party in the grounds of the home, Bingham, in mortal peril, discovers the astonishing secret and shocking experiment that the residents have been involved with, as Sir Mark and Joan race there in a helicopter, hoping they are not too late to save the day.
