Synopsis: Sybil and Branson prepare for the birth of their baby. Dr Clarkson finds himself in competition with Sir Philip Tapsell and when a serious complication arises in Sybil's pregnancy the two physicians disagree. Lady Edith's letter to The Times results in an exciting offer of a column in The Sketch, much to the disapproval of the Earl. Anna has a breakthrough in her attempts to prove Bates's innocence. O'Brien continues to stir relations between Jimmy and Thomas. Isobel believes she has a solution to Ethel's problems and stands by her decision when offered an ultimatum by Mrs Bird. Daisy is jealous of the attention the new maid, Daisy, is receiving from Alfred and Jimmy. When Dr Clarkson suggests taking Sybil to the hospital the family stand by Sir Philip. Sybil delivers a baby girl but her condition suddenly worsens and she dies. Matthew is concerned about the Earl's blinkered view of the estate and consults Mr Murray - Mary is unhappy with Matthew's approach to Murray. Murray visits Bates in prison. The family grieve for Sybil.
