The War That Made the Nazis (Original title)
Date: 14 December 2002 (Television)

Country: United Kingdom

Directed by: Charlie Smith

Synopsis: Apart from the personality of Adolf Hitler, the most significant factor behind the rise of the Nazi party was World War One. The war had inspired fervent nationalism, and the myth grew after defeat that Germany had not been defeated, but instead had been betrayed by enemies within. The dream of German unity and rebirth as a military power was driven underground, where, in the 1920s, it was to give birth to Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. With contributions from Professor Peter Fritzsche (University of Illinois), Emil Klein (a schoolboy in 1914 and later a Hitler Youth leader), Dr. Jorgen Forster (military historian), Dr. Gregor Dallas (author of '1918'), Nigel Jones (author, 'Hitler's Heralds'), Anton Gobel (served in the 1st Bavarian Regiment, 1914-18), Dr. Gary Sheffield (author, 'Forgotten Victory'), and Professor Michael Burleigh (author, 'The Third Reich').
