Synopsis: Baron von Utz is a Czech millionaire who has a priceless collection of Meissen porcelain, which he has been allowed to keep on condition it goes to the state on his death. Flashbacks depict his early life and treatment of Marta, a country girl he had met and who still works for him. On his deathbed Utz persuades Marta to destroy his porcelain rather than let the state get it.
