Synopsis: Fisher is good at his job as headmaster, but finds that in new circumstances he has to face all the risks of competition. He has no degree and has successfully been headmaster of a secondary school for many years. However, the school is due to merge with a grammar school and become a comprehensive. He goes for the job of head of the new school, but loses out to a younger man with more progressive ideas. Fisher is disillusioned and faced with teaching within a new system he neither likes nor understands.
