Synopsis: DRAMA. A cabaret artiste sacrifices her own pride and love for her daughter.Shotlist: r.1 Paris night life is in full swing and the Moulin Rouge clientele are enjoying a succession of exotic cabaret turns which progress from girls in saucy sailor suits through ballet to a magnificent oriental dance. Parysia, the glittering central figure of the piece rides up from among the encircling figures (798). r.2 A young couple arrive at the Moulin Rouge and install themselves in a box. The girl watches the dance intently. After the show, Parysia is visited by one of her admirers in the dressing room. She dispenses with his company, saying that she has just received a note from her daughter who has just left school and is engaged. When she meets the young couple, there is obviously an immediate and mutual feeling between Margaret's fiance Andre de Rochambeau and Parysia (1516). r.3 The couple celebrate their engagement but Parysia of the dangers of her feelings for Andre declines to dance with him. In bed at night, Margaret reveals that Andre's aristocratic father refuses to give his consent to the marriage on account of Parysia's associations with the stage. While Margaret is assuring her mother of her faith in Andre's love, Andre is avidly scanning magazines filled with Parysia's photographs (2304). r.4 Parysia goes out to the Marquis de Rochambeau's chateau to broach the subject of her daughter's marriage. The marquis is adamant in his refusal but obviously attracted to Parysia who steadfastly forfeiting her own honour and love for Andre encourages him. The Marquis despatches his consent to his son's marriage and Parysia relays it to the couple. When alone with her, Andre dramatically declares that it is she he loves but Parysia, showing iron self control spurns him and insists that he sets a date for his marriage to Margaret. Having extorted this from him, she and the unsuspecting Margaret go to the Maison du Pre to choose the wedding trouseau (3181). r.5 Andre distracted in love and tormented by his conscience writes a letter to his father accusing him of giving his consent only at the price of Parysia. Dissatisfied with it however, he tears it up. That evening after performing at the Moulin Rouge, Parysia dines with an old admirer and Andre and Margaret are left alone. Margaret quickly gets drunk and flirts with Andre who is steeped in suicidal gloom (3973). r.6 On the way home, Margaret insists that she and Andre must go and see his father the next day and persuade him to come to the wedding. Andre leaves her and goes to the deserted Moulin Rouge and lets himself into Parysia's dressing room. He hesitates about leaving a suicide note proclaiming his love for her and his unwillingness to live a lie but he eventually tears it up. Meanwhile Margaret tries on her wedding dress and shows it to her mother (4767). r.7 The next day Andre comes in his car to call for Margaret but insists that he goes alone to his father's. He is obviously in a highly nervous state and suddenly collapses. Leaving Andre in Parysia's care, Margaret goes off in the car. When Andre comes round, he reveals to Parysia that he had loosened the brakes in his car so that the journey over the rough roads would mean sure death for him. Parysia, horror-stricken and terrified for Margaret's safety sends him off in her car dramatically telling him to save Margaret and kill himself (5606). r.8 Andre drives feverishly after Margaret who meanwhile has reached the chateau, found that the marquis is not at home and is preparing to drive back. On the way, she loses control of the car. Andre passes her, reverses, overtakes her and for some time, the two cars are careering along side by side. Andre tries to get control of the other car and they crash. Parysia hears the news as she is about to go on stage (6356). r.9 Numbed with grief and horror, she staggers through her act. Meanwhile Margaret is being operated on (7147). r.10 The operation is successful and Andre stays by the bedside. Parysia arrives and is overwhelmed with relief to see Margaret alive. She tells Andre that he now has a chance to redeem himself. He interprets this as fulfilment of his promise to marry Margaret. This he does and the couple leave for their honeymoon while Parysia carries on with her work at the Moulin Rouge. The End (7654).
