The voiceless acousmêtre: Paranormal Activity's digital surround sound demon
/ Nessa Johnston
In:
Music, sound, and the moving image v9 n2 Autumn 2015
, pp. 131-144
Article - English -
Analyses the use of sound to convey a demonic presence in Oren Peli's 'found footage' horror film 'Paranormal Activity' (2007), focusing on the way that digital surround sound allows the 'demonic' sound to move beyond the screen into the exhibition space, and relates it to Michael Chion's concept of the 'acousmêtre', an unseen character with an audible voice.
