A Life for a Life Part 1 (Original title)
Date: 14 October 1993 (Television)

Country: United Kingdom

Director: Lorraine Jackson, Peter Hood

Synopsis: Documentary recounting the activities and crimes of the Kray gang, and the imprisonment of Reggie and Ronnie Kray. The programme focuses on the campaign for the release of Reggie Kray and the attempts to portray the twins as harmless to the general public, only preying on fellow villains. Examples are given of other long-term prisoners who, it is argued, ought to be freed after serving over 20 years for domestic murder. Those in support of Reggie Kray's release claim state that he receives hundreds of letters from people, who he tries to help, and former gang members say that he in fact kept order in the East End of London and would have prevented the street crime that exists today. Sir Teddy Taylor MP feels that long sentences (and the death sentence) did deter others from following the example of criminals. Ronnie Kray, first certified insane in 1958, is a paranoid schizophrenic in Broadmoor where he is likely to remain until he dies.
