- SynopsisACTUALITY. Laying the foundation stone [?] of Seaham pier. Dignitaries in top hats come down steps to foundations of Seaham pier, under construction, with crowd in distance watching from cliff edge. Two workmen stand over them on long wooden joist, as some sort of ceremony takes place by a large foundation stone attached to ropes and a pulley (two journalists to the left write in their notebooks). The dignitaries start to ascend the steps. View slightly to left looking up as dignitaries stand on platform with group of women to left and crowd higher up in background. Return to first view as dignitaries come down steps once more (71ft). Note: According to The Northern Echo, 3 April 1930 (copy in BFI's James Henderson collection) the film features the Marquis and Marchioness of Londonderry, the foundation stone was laid by Sir Michael Hicks-Beach, and the event took place on 26 August 1899. Also present were Lord Castlereagh and his then fiancee Miss Chaplin, later Lady Londonderry. The film was probably taken by George Henderson of Stockton. (Shotlist)
