- SynopsisAction spy thriller. When three British secret agents are killed in quick succession, James Bond is sent to New York to investigate. The case takes him from Harlem to New Orleans and a Caribbean island called San Monique. He comes up against the mysterious Dr Kananga, prime minister of San Monique, who is planning to double the number of drug addicts in the world and become a monopoly supplier of heroin. Using voodoo as a smokescreen to ward off anyone looking into his business, he uses the fortune-telling skills of a young woman, Solitaire. His henchmen include a flamboyant voodoo dancer, Baron Samedi, Tee Hee who has a metal claw for a right hand, and the softly-spoken Whisper. Bond's adventures include being kidnapped in a New Orleans bar, driving a double decker bus under a low bridge, being trapped in a farm full of hungry crocodiles and making an escape in a speedboat through the bayous. (Synopsis)
- Work historySeries note: The first of seven James Bond films to star Roger Moore as Bond. Writing note: The only 'official' Bond film up to that point to be credited to a sole screenwriter. ('Moonraker' would be too, in 1979.) Casting note: In his diary of making the film (published in 1973 as 'Roger Moore as James Bond 007'; republished in 2018 as 'The 007 Diaries: Filming Live and Let Die'), Roger Moore says that Bernard Lee, cast as M, might be unable to film 'for personal reasons'. Moore says that Kenneth More rang him and offered to play M if the fee was still sent to Lee. (In the end Lee was able to play M.)
