- SynopsisDrama. In the 1940s, an American couple, Kit and Port Moresby, both writers of sorts, travel across North Africa, going from the relative sophistication of the Grand Hotel in a French Algerian port, to small Saharan towns and villages with very little in the way of comforts. Their ten-year marriage is put under scrutiny, not least because neither seems entirely determined to remain faithful. Setting out, they are accompanied by their friend George Tunner, a young man who seems to be in love with Kit. They sometimes meet, and try to avoid, a shrill English travel writer, Mrs Lyle, and her money-sponging son Eric. Illness dogs the Moresbys' steps and their travels take an unexpected turn.
