- SynopsisPeriod musical. Yentl, a village woman in Eastern Europe in the early 1900s, struggles against the traditions whereby men are allowed to study works of Jewish teaching but women are not. When her rabbi father dies, she dresses as a boy and sets out to a yeshiva (a religious school), hoping to be accepted as a student of the Talmud. This goes to plan, and, posing as Anshel, Yentl proves an avid student. Complications set in when she begins to fall in love with her best friend, fellow student Avigdor, and the problem is compounded when he urges Yentl to marry his beloved ex-fiancée, the dutiful Hadass.
