- SynopsisComedy. Grady Tripp is a middle-aged academic and novelist who was once the literary critics' favourite, but since the publication of his master tome seven years previously, he has been unable to summon up the same inspiration and cannot finish his new novel. In addition, his lover, the chancellor of the college and wife of the head of the English department, has just informed him she is pregnant. Grady finds a kindred spirit in James Leer, a suicidal but gifted pupil in his writing class, and together the two find themselves coming into contact with a motley collection of characters, one of them being Grady's editor, Terry, who develops a romantic interest in James.
