- SynopsisFilm adaptation of the play by William Shakespeare set in Renaissance Venice against a backdrop of anti-Semitism, moneylending, love and courting. The Jewish moneylender Shylock, embittered by his abuse from society and from the nobleman Antonio in particular, exacts a high price from the latter when he comes to borrow money. The price is for a pound of his flesh if he cannot pay back the money on time. When things go awry for Antonio, his friend Bassanio's intended bride Portia steps in in the guise of a lawyer to prevent tragedy. (Synopsis)
