- SynopsisSubmarine drama, inspired by a true story, which follows the heroic efforts of a Russian captain who, at the height of the Cold War, is ordered to take command of the nuclear missible submarine K-19 away from it original commander, and to quickly ready the ill-prepared craft for her maiden voyage. (Synopsis) Drama set in 1961 telling the true story of Russian submarine K-19, rushed into service without either proper testing or technical back-up and in spite of the reservations of its commander and captain. A leak in the reactor's cooling system leads to a steady increase in the reactor's heat. If this reaches 1000 degrees, meltdown will set off K-19's nuclear missiles, and international disaster would surely follow. Repairing the leak will, however, involve accepting lethal doses of radiation for the men involved. Demanding, fiercely loyal Captain Alexei Vostrikov and his executive officer, the well-loved and respected Captain Mikhail Polenin, clash over the way through this nightmare situation. (Synopsis)
