Many lives lost in terrible fire after collison at Gretna" (77). MS of a derailed train, smoke rising from the debris and men picking over the wreckage; camera pans past a crane on the track (99). NOTE: According to WHITAKER'S ALMANACK (1916, p 457) the accident took place at Quintin's Hill, a mile north of Gretna Green on the Caledonian line on the 22nd May 1915. The troop train was heading south with 500 troops on board when it ran into a local passenger train; the "Scotch Express" from Euston then crashed into the wreckage of both killing 157 people and injuring 200. "OUR NEW ALLY. Italian Cavalry on the Austrian Frontier" (204). A cavalry battalion thunder down a hill and back up the other side of a valley (237). LS of sixty or so cavalrymen riding down a hill towards the camera and then past the camera (269). "Famous mountain batteries on the move towards Trentino" (275). Pan around a group of militiamen preparing to leave a settlement: saddling of horses, loading supplies on to donkeys and horses, final shot in sequence is of a young man staring sadly at the camera, standing next to a donkey. The men are dressed in white hats and a mishmash of dark jackets and light trousers (306). A column of men on horses, donkeys and on foot weave their way up a rocky mountain path towards the camera. One wears a hat with the letters "CAP...." on it (323). LS of men walking, with several others on horseback, along a rocky mountain path (341ft). NOTE: the assumption that this is part of the same Pathé newsreel issue comes from the fact that Italy entered the war on 23 May 1915 after signing a treaty with Britain, France and Russia.
