- SynopsisDRAMA. A prostitute leaves her gambler lover for a lighthouse keeper, but their happiness is spoiled when the lover returns and she learns that her husband still despises her. John, a French lighthouse keeper rescues a prostitute (Louise) from a brawl with her gambler lover Maxim. She follows after him gratefully, but although showing her some pity he rows off back to the lighthouse without her. However he gets caught up in a storm and prays that if saved he will help the girl in her plight. The couple are next seen on their wedding day, but John continues to despise her until she changes her manner and appearance and becomes the dutiful wife. They are now happy, but Maxim returns, demanding that Louise shelters him for the night. She goes to John's lighthouse in the morning with Maxim following her. The two men confront one another and start a fight. From John's comments Louise realises that he still holds her in contempt and she heads for a rowing boat. Maxim escapes John, but pursued by a policeman and the hue and cry he falls over a cliff edge to his death. Louise lets the oars slip from her boat, a storm rises, and the upturned boat is later seen on the shore. (Synopsis)
