- SynopsisCrime comedy. New York-based 'godfather' Scallini sends his associate Tony Marchione to inform French businessman Philippe Douvier that he no longer trusts Douvier's ability to control his end of their 'French connection' heroin-smuggling arrangements. Douvier promises to demonstrate he is still strong by committing an outrageous crime, such as an assassination. He decides a suitable target would be the Chief Inspector Jacques Clouseau, the famous detective recently decorated by the President. Assassins are duly sent to kill Clouseau, though his innate clumsiness conspires to thwart their every effort. A cross-dressing criminal named Clause Russo robs Clouseau of his car and clothes at gunpoint, and shortly thereafter Russo is killed by Douvier's men, who believe it is Clouseau that they have killed. With the world believing him dead, Clouseau undertakes to investigate the assassination attempts and bring the culprits to justice. He is aided by Simone Le Gree, until recently Douvier's private secretary and mistress, but now embittered and keen to bring Douvier down. Meanwhile, on hearing of Clouseau's death, Clouseau's old boss, former Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus, has recovered from his nervous breakdown (which was brought on by Clouseau's spectacular incompetence), and is ready to return to normal life. It is with utter horror then that he keeps spotting Clouseau turning up (in Dreyfus's hospital wardrobe, at Clouseau's supposed funeral or even in Dreyfus's own bedroom), and he begins to lose his mind again. Simone knows that Douvier is about to complete a fifty-million-franc heroin deal codenamed the Gannet Transaction, meeting the American buyer in Hong Kong. Clouseau, Simone and Clouseau's loyal manservant Cato Fong travel to Hong Kong to pose as Scallini and associates. There, a series of confusions and bad disguise choices lead to a chaotic situation in a hotel. They go to the Lee Key boatyard where the ship 'Gannet' is ready to set sail, secretly loaded with heroin. When Clouseau's Scallini disguise is blown, there is a chase ending up in a dockside fireworks warehouse where they finally have a chance to rout the villains. (Synopsis)
- Work historySeries note: Fifth 'Pink Panther' film directed by Blake Edwards and starring Peter Sellers. It was Sellers' final appearance as Clouseau in his lifetime, though Edwards went on to use existing footage featuring Sellers in 'Trail of the Pink Panther' (1982). Edwards also directed 'Curse of the Pink Panther' (1983) and 'Son of the Pink Panther' (1993), which did not feature footage of Sellers. In addition to the Blake Edwards 'Pink Panther' films, there was the film 'Inspector Clouseau' (1968), starring Alan Arkin in the title role. Steve Martin played Clouseau in two reboot films, 'The Pink Panther' (2006) and 'The Pink Panther 2' (2009). Release date note: The date given is for the London West End release.
