- SynopsisThe forms of torture used during the Inquisition. Soldiers and priests enter the gaol and call prisoners who are marched away as a priest holds a cross over them (66). THE TORTURE GALLERY. A woman is shut into a coffin lined with spikes (132). A man in stocks has his feet branded (157). A man is strung up by his ankles and weights are tied to his wrists (192). The priests pass by other examples of torture; they speak to a man on the rack and order that liquid be poured into his mouth, using a funnel (226). A procession of clergy, prisoners and soldiers (316). THE WHEEL. A prisoner is tied to a large wheel which is mounted on a stand and can be rotated. Nearby a priest fans a brazier with bellows, so that the man on the wheel is exposed to intense heat at each revolution. Later, a bed of spikes on a frame is pushed closer and closer as the wheel turns quickly (416). THE TORTURE BENCH. Priests supervise the tying of a prisoner to the rack (517). AUTO DA FE. In a town square, clergy and soldiers assemble to witness two prisoners being tied to the stake and burned (631ft). (Shotlist)
